Boylan's Tyreis Thomas - the No. 68 player on our list - is one of the most decorated high school players ever in the NIC-10.
Thomas was the star running back on Boylan's back-to-back state championship teams in 2010 and 2011. In 2010, he gained 1,598 yards and scored 14 touchdowns on 166 carries. He finished second to Austin Smaha of Belvidere North in total yards but averaged a league-leading 9.6 yards per carry. This included 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 48-19 state championship win over Aurora Marmion Academy.
Thomas led the NIC-10 in rushing and touchdowns in 2011, gaining 1,606 yards and scoring 24 TDs as Boylan repeated. Thomas had 125 yards rushing in the title game against Wheaton Warrenville South, which was a two-time defending state champion.
He was the third all-time leading rusher in the NIC-10 when he graduated.
Despite all the accolades and exposure, Thomas had to start his career at the junior college level. He gained 1,094 yards at the College of DuPage and then followed his coach to Dodge City Community College in Kansas where he rushed for 1,380 yards and was named a JUCO All-American.
That finally earned him an NCAA Division I scholarship with South Alabama of the Sun Belt Conference. Thomas had a solid junior year, starting two games and gaining 552 yards, including games of 88 yards against Idaho and 84 yards against Texas State.
Unfortunately, Thomas was injured during spring practice and never really hit his stride his senior year, gaining just 300 yards on 73 carries. Still, there are very few running backs from the NIC-10 who topped his 852 yards in Division I.
