The No. 82 player on the list can take another few steps up this season by taking a step down in competition.
He was rated a three-star recuit by some scouting services and Hickcox signed with Western Michigan, which was coming off a 13-1 season under coach P.J. Fleck. When Fleck was hired away by the University of Minnesota, Hickcox eagerly accepted an offer to follow Fleck into the Big Ten.
Hickcox redshirted in 2017 and has played a total of 26 games in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The play, though, mostly has been on special teams. To date, he's made just seven collegiate tackles.
Hickcox this winter decided to transfer to a school where he could get more playing time and chose Illinois State, which is coached by former Rockford East great Brock Spack. Because of the NCAA ruling that allowed athletes to play last year without having it count against their eligibility, the 6-4, 300-pound Hickcox will have two seasons in Bloomington to prove he can make an impact.
