Breakout Athletes: Laurie Walquist, Rockford

Rockford High School’s Laurie Walquist is one of the pioneers of football and one of the greatest all-around athletes in Rockford history.

In football, Walquist led Rockford High School to a conference title and the University of Illinois to a Western Conference championship. He was All-Western Conference in 1919 and 1920 and team captain in 1921. Walquist then played for the Chicago Bears for eight seasons. The Bears were winners in seven of those and Walquist lined up with some of the legends of the game, including George Halas, Red Grange and Bronco Nagurski.

Walquist played left and right halfback and occasionally quarterback in the old single-wing offense where backfield players could run, pass or go out as receivers at any time.

Walquist also starred at basketball at Rockford High, played three years for Illinois, including being named All-Western Conference in 1922, and played a few years of professional basketball.

Walquist died in 1985.
